Case # 1: Fleet Insurance Savings Through Systematic DataQ Management

A regional trucking company operating 77 commercial motor vehicles engaged Barnes Safety & Consulting to manage their FMCSA DataQ challenge process on an ongoing basis. The carrier had accumulated crash records and roadside inspection violations in MCMIS that were negatively impacting their CAB score and, by extension, their insurance premiums.

Barnes Safety reviewed the carrier’s crash history and inspection records, identifying non-preventable crashes that had been recorded without a preventability determination and roadside inspection violations that did not meet the regulatory standard for citation. DataQ challenges were prepared and submitted for each qualifying record, with supporting documentation and regulatory citations provided for every challenge.

Over the course of one year, the systematic removal and correction of inaccurate data produced measurable results. According to the carrier’s insurance representative, the improved CAB score resulted in an estimated savings of $2,000 per vehicle — approximately $154,000 in annual insurance premium reduction across the 77-vehicle fleet.

Case # 2: Roadside Inspection Violations Removed, CSA Score Improved

A motor carrier contacted Barnes Safety & Consulting after a series of roadside inspections resulted in violations that were pushing their CSA BASIC percentiles into alert status. Elevated CSA scores had begun attracting increased scrutiny and were threatening the carrier’s ability to retain freight contracts.

Barnes Safety reviewed each inspection report against the applicable provisions of 49 CFR and CVSA Out-of-Service criteria. Violations that did not meet the regulatory standard for citation were challenged through the FMCSA DataQ system with full documentation. Successful challenges resulted in the removal of qualifying violations from MCMIS, producing a direct reduction in the carrier’s CSA BASIC percentiles and removing them from alert status.

Case # 3: Post-Crash DataQ Challenge Protects Carrier Safety Record

A commercial motor carrier suffered a crash that was recorded in MCMIS without a non-preventability determination, exposing the carrier to an unwarranted increase in their Crash Indicator BASIC percentile. Left unchallenged, the record would remain on the carrier’s safety profile for 36 months and affect insurance renewals.

A DataQ challenge was prepared with a full statement of facts and supporting evidence demonstrating the crash met the criteria for a non-preventable determination. The challenge was successful, and the crash record was updated in MCMIS accordingly, protecting the carrier’s safety profile and CAB score.
